Overnight Success
I have built a lot of bikes with a lot of different styles but I always seem to gravitate back to the lowrider-style bikes. There is just something about the air ride down to the ground, flaked-out look that I can’t get away from when I’m doing my personal bikes. It also helps that my good friend and painter, Boosted Brad, shares my love for classic quality lowrider art and is a master at it.
I took a new job with RC Components as head of R&D and resident bike builder, and we have been coming up with new ideas left and right, so I figured it was time to build myself a bike using some of our new progressive ideas and products, such as the big front wheel with some of the classic styling that I always depend on.
I made the choice about a month before that I wanted to build a new bike to ride to the Sturgis bike rally, so I stripped the Road King down to the frame for a complete redo. It took a week or two to make the RC Components wheels, air cleaner, etc., and wait for the Sinister Industries bodywork and Legends Air Ride. It was then time to go to work. I mocked it up in two days, then got the paint off to Brad. After three all-nighters in a row, he had the paint back to me on the fourth day. I cut, stretched, and raked the frame so the trail and ride would be perfect, then reassembled the motor and bike complete with fresh black powdercoat. The wheels, rotors, and air cleaner are all RC Components Drifter design and I went with the RC extended muffler tips that fit perfect with extended saddlebags, as well as the matching grips. I stripped the bike down some by removing passing lamps, switch housings, mirrors, gauges, and every wire that went to the front of the bike except the headlight. I installed the Legends Air Ride in the rear with Progressive for springs and lowered the front 1-inch also. I finished it off with a set of Todd’s Cycles mini ape hangers. I put the finishing touches on it Sunday night at midnight and had to pull out at 6 a.m. to head to Sturgis. It was the longest testride I’ve ever had, but the bike did perfect.
I ride fast and aggressive and this bike is set up perfectly for that style of riding. Believe it or not, the 26-inch wheels are not just for show bikes. I can drag the pegs just like any of my other bikes. Overall it was a fun build for a great trip. I am looking forward to the next one.
