29 pictures from Japan’s Hot Rod Custom Show

Walking through the Hot Rod Custom Show (HRCS) in Yokohama is a complete sensory overload. You could pace the floor for days with eyes peeled and still notice new details, new bikes, cars, people, clothing, and art. But the show only lasts one day—one incredible day to soak it all in. The display of California custom culture and the way the Japanese have translated, adapted, and made it their own was incredible. From Dickies and Vans to Corona bottles and In-N-Out signs, it was East meets West in all the best ways.

Being invited to this show is an honor and everyone here knows it. No builder took this invite lightly, as the showroom was covered with top-level custom after top-level custom and not a single slouch in the bunch. Cars and bikes came in from all over the world in all manners of dress. From patina and rust to shine and flake, choppers to baggers, the HRCS has the cream of several crops.

The International Village housed custom builders, garages, and artists from the US, Europe, Australia, and other parts of Asia, so it was great seeing a lot of familiar faces from the industry. On either ends of the large hall that held the event were several rows of vendors displaying a huge array of goods. There were some of Japan’s most popular moto-minded clothing brands like Iron Hearts Denim displaying their wares. Lots of leather goods, vintage toys, cool new Japanese brands we’ve never heard of like Wacky Race with awesome mottos like “The life is gamble!”

Across the whole show, there were so many new and awesome things it really was a challenge to take it all in. If you have ever considered going to the Hot Rod Custom Show, we can’t recommend it enough.
