Big Bear Chopper’s Big, Bad Dyna

The Hot Bike Tour is all about riding. It’s the only bike show that demands you leave the truck and trailer at home and head out on the open road to ride that custom show bike each and every mile. While some builders get a partial pass for trailering their bikes to the kick-of location, other builders, like Big Bear Chopper’s Kevin Alsop, decided to take the challenge that extra step and ride more than 3,500 miles, including to and from the tour.
Big Bear Choppers (BBC) has come a long way since its former years as the king of the raked and rigid long choppers of the early 2000s. With its launch of the Titanium FXR based customs and more recently its line of parts for Dynas, the crew has reposition themselves at the forefront of the performance V-twin scene. When Kevin was asked to participate as a Hot Bike Invited Builder, he immediately got to work on not only building a truly badass bike, but he also used the opportunity to develop products for BBC’s growing catalog. “I built this bike to feature all the parts I designed for the H-D Dyna model,” Kevin explained. What better way to test newly designed products than to hit the open road and beat the hell out of them for two weeks? That’s exactly the testing procedures BBC decided to do. “The bike came out really good with all the parts we designed,” Kevin said. “We had zero failures in over 3,500 miles over 10 long days. Along with normal riding, we beat the bikes with wheelies and burnouts. It performed amazingly, and the S&S T143 motor ran smooth and powerful. The Baker seven-speed transmission performed just as amazing as the Öhlins suspension.”

In order to test the limits of the bike, a few laws may or may not have been broken. “We ran the bike at speeds up to 160 miles per hour many times over the tour, as many of the other riders witnessed,” Kevin said. All under closed-course scenarios I’m sure. Wink, wink.
There is also much more to the Hot Bike Tour than just beating on bikes. Each builder walks away with a slightly different experience. When Kevin was asked what he thought of the overall tour he had this to say: “The whole trip was great. All the builders were great guys to hang with, and everyone was super humble. I had a lot of fun and was given a lot of respect from my fellow builders.” When asked if he had any final words of wisdom after returning, Kevin simply stated, “Ride hard. Leave an ugly corpse.”
