If you ever want to see a bike built out of sheer love of having a custom motorcycle tailored to the individual, the readers' rides section of Hot Bike is a good place to look. None of these machines are made for a specific show or as a customer order; they're the personal rides of the people who make up the entire custom bike scene: you.
Every month it's our privilege to share the latest choppers, baggers, and so on from across the galaxy of the V-twin lifestyle. Some of the best come from our readers. Here are some of the most recent.
Here is my super-clean 2017 Harley-Davidson FXDL. It has custom paint by an award-winning painter, lots of powdercoating, show chrome wheels and pulley, mirror polished rotors, custom seat, Progressive Suspension, and chrome hardware everywhere. For the motor it has heads, cams, exhaust, and V&H FP3. I also added Arlen Ness grips, pegs, shift peg, mirrors, and black levers. It has lots of details all with 1 mile on the odometer.
The donor bike for this project was a 2005 Harley Sportster 1,200c that I picked up for $2,750. You can see from the photo it was a pretty nice used bike. I cut the back end off the bike and installed a hardtail bobber kit from Ryca Motors. The gas tank was from Pandemonium Custom Choppers. The exhaust was from Led Sled Customs. I put a Dynajet Thunderslide kit in the carb with an S&S air cleaner. The frame powdercoating was done by GT Fabrication and the silver paint by local painter Gary Martinelli. Altogether I spent about $7,300 (price of the bike included) to arrive at the finished product. I did the work in my garage over this past winter.
