Dyna Removable Fairing Install | Break the Breeze

Wide Open's removable fairing adds riding comfort

We love to talk about being “in the breeze,” but the reality is that constant breeze is more like a rushing wind. Over longer distances, riding can become a bit less entertaining with the nonstop blast of 70-mph air pressing against your chest. There is something to be said about riding comfort over the longer hauls. We can bash on the baggers all we want, but those big fairings can be a blessing on a high-mileage ride. If only there was a way to have the best of both worlds…

Wide Open has what it believes is the answer to just that problem. Made from high-impact ABS plastic, the inner and outer molds are epoxy welded together to create a strong unibody fairing. wide open’s fairings come in the natural white ABS color and can be easily painted to match your stock motorcycle or custom cruiser. Pricing for one of the kits (MSRP $750) includes the ABS fairing drilled for four 5-1/4-inch speakers, two different wiring access panels, a windshield with stainless trim and rubber seal, self-adhesive sound-absorbing mat, brackets, and all the hardware with instructions to allow you handle the installation yourself.

Options are available for stereo and speaker upgrades with a retractable marine splashguard at additional price. Our ongoing Harley-Davidson Wide Glide project seemed the perfect candidate for one of wide open’s removable fairing conversions. The Dyna is a great machine on its own, but the fairing will allow us to go on extended trips and explore those twisty back roads for a longer amount of time before we feel exhausted and have to pull in for the night. We don’t claim to be master motorcycle technicians and we accomplished the install from start to finish ourselves; so you can too!

Wide Open creates all of its fairings from ABS and they come unpainted just as you see here.

We had our fairing painted to match the Dyna’s black coverings before we got started installing the stainless brackets, but we recommend you install everything first, then paint the fairing.

Plenty of windshield color and size options were available at the time we ordered. Our choice was the black 5-1/2-inch sport windshield

Having some music onboard couldn’t hurt, so we opted for serious JVC audio components to blast out our favorite tunes.

Pre-terminated wires were included in the speaker boxes, so we plugged the connectors on and ran the wiring out through the stereo opening.

All screwed in place, and with the speaker grilles snapped on, our fairing was beginning to look like something that should have been on a more custom motorcycle.

The CSZX530 speakers were a perfect fit and the JVC KD-X50BT head unit had the wiring schematic on it for which wires went where. It may look tough, but everything so far has been Betty Crocker simple.

After completing the speaker wiring, it was a simple matter of plugging the harness into the back of the head unit.

Only four screws were required to mount the stereo head unit and marine weather guard into the fairing’s provided opening.

We mentioned that two separate wiring covers came with the Wide Open kit. For our ’11 Dyna, we opted to use the one with the cubby hole to provide a place to set an MP3 player or phone. We drilled a hole to accept the USB plug equipped on the JVC stereo.

Four screws attached the cubby panel to the underside of the fairing’s dash and placed the opening in easy reach for the rider.

Mounting brackets for the fairing clamped around the upper fork legs and could be adjusted to set the fairing in a number of different positions as necessary for nearly any bike.

All wired up to the Dyna’s battery, we set the color choice on the stereo’s screen to match our LED fuel level display. The JVC head unit had an additional USB plug on its face as a backup to the longer USB cable we coiled up in the cubbyhole.

With our chosen satellite radio channel on our phone, we dialed up some volume and rode off into the sunset. It was easy!
