Jaimie Kangas of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, owns and rides this very clean rigid frame Sportster, custom-built for her by her husband Jason, of Twisted Choppers. Twisted Choppers specializes in…well…Twisted Chopper–style motorcycles. This is only Jaimie’s second custom motorcycle, her first was a radically raked rigid chopper, also built by Jason. This custom bobber is completely different from her first machine. It has more of a vintage race look to it, rather than a traditional raked and stretched street chopper appearance. Jaimie wanted a custom two wheeler that was smaller and lighter than most so that it would fit her riding style and would still be comfortable to ride.

A 2001 Harley-Davidson XL1200 was purchased as a donor bike for the project and even though it was a complete and rideable bike, it was quickly torn apart. The frame was chopped up and modified to accept a Twisted Choppers hardtail kit. Twisted Choppers weld-on hardtail kits come with all the required components and hardware for converting any Harley-Davidson Sportster into a rigid-frame motorcycle. Also included in the kit is a Twisted Choppers custom oil tank, rear fender, seat, and a custom battery box. So obviously, once Jason had the frame welded back together and the rest of the components on, there was very little left of the original donor bike other than the drivetrain and front frame section. The exhaust system, seat and mounts, and handlebars among other things were all hand-made for this bike. And up front, Jason built a springer frontend to the exact length needed to maintain the desired ride height to meet Jaimie’s specifications.

The bike utilizes a combination of old and new components for a simple yet traditional appearance that looks mighty fine from any angle.

Speaking of ride height, the addition of the rigid tail section dropped the seat height quite a bit, giving Jaimie’s bike a lower center of gravity and better handling overall. In order to give Jaimie a little more comfort when on the road, Jason opted to go with one of his sprung seats rather than a rigid mount. Without a sprung seat the road can be real a body punisher when riding a hardtail.

When asked what was the most challenging part of the build, Jaimie answered, “Getting my husband to finish the thing! The whole project started as my second custom motorcycle, so it kept getting put on the back burner, taking a back seat to other projects in the shop. More than a year passed without much work getting done on it.” Jaimie ended up selling her chopper during the winter and with riding season approaching fast, she didn’t want to be without a bike. So she gave Jason a kick in the pants and the build started to gain momentum and was finally finished in the spring. The bike utilizes a combination of old and new components for a simple yet traditional appearance that looks mighty fine from any angle. And with the Sportster drivetrain mounted in the lightweight chassis, it supplies plenty of ponies for Jaimie’s everyday riding pleasure. HB
