Indepth Zipper's Performance is the cure-all for horsepower enthusiasts looking for more getup and go. The company has been in the motorcycle performance business since 1978 and a manufacturer of some of the highest-quality engine and transmission components around.

In 2002 Zipper's teamed up with Thunder Heart Performance, which manufactures the system, and launched the ThunderMax with AutoTune. The ThunderMax system is a wide-band, closed-loop system that continually and automatically adjusts the air-fuel ratios whenever you ride, even when there are changes in ambient temperatures or elevation. This system also claims quicker throttle response, increased power, and cooler operating temperatures, and is backed by a three-year warranty.

After several years of development, the ThunderMax is now available for Throttle-By-Wire Harleys. Basically, a throttle-by-wire setup utilizes a throttle actuation sensor to move the throttle blade in place of a throttle cable setup. So instead of operating the throttle mechanically, throttle positioning is now operated electronically on some motorcycle models. The ThunderMax with AutoTune for Throttle-By-Wire motorcycles was developed specifically to handle this new throttle system.

We caught up with the guys from ThunderMax installing these modules like gangbusters at 2010 Daytona Beach Bike Week. Fortunately, we were able to snap some pics of the ThunderMax TBW going on an '09 Harley-Davidson CVO Electra Glide Ultra Classic. The best part, it only took about 30-40 minutes to get the module hooked up and the software installed.

The narrow band sensor is limited in that it only tells the computer if the air/fuel mixture is rich or lean, but not how rich or how lean. The wide-band sensor tells the computer exactly how rich or lean the air/fuel mixture is, and as a result, sends the computer a series of air/fuel mixture readings to compensate and deliver the most optimal performing mixture.

The ThunderMax with AutoTune System is a fuel-management system representing the future in smart aftermarket components for H-D motorcycles. Developed by Zipper's Performance Products and Thunder Heart Performance, ThunderMax incorporates the same technology used on high-performance racecars and applies it to V-twin engines.

The ThunderMax with AutoTune system consists of the ThunderMax Electronic Control Module (ECM) and the AutoTune. The system works by constantly monitoring air/fuel ratios, and instantly adapting for changes in ambient riding conditions such as: air pressure, air temperature, elevation, and air density. The key to the system is starting with the dyno-developed base maps, then allowing the system to learn.

The library of base maps is continually growing and covers a wide range of applications, with maps available for all fuel-injected Harley-Davidsons and most popular aftermarket parts combinations. Using the parameters set by the base map loaded into the ThunderMax ECM, the AutoTune then fine-tunes the map at every throttle position customizing the base map for the rider and his riding conditions.

The average Joe can install the unit, set the base map, and go for a ride. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to use the ThunderMax and get the best tune for your bike. However, someone with more advanced tuning needs, like a tuner or a racer, can use the provided ThunderMax Tuner Software to tailor the fuel system to his needs. This includes, but is not limited to, starting, idle speed, fuel, spark, and rpm.

The system is completely adaptable to the changes that riders make to their bikes, and even to custom applications. Whether the changes are simple like air cleaners, exhaust pipes and cams, or are more complex, performance-oriented upgrades like big-inch motor kits, the ThunderMax can grow and adapt. The ThunderMax provides a more stable engine operating temperature and a reliable fuel delivery platform, allowing any rider from street to strip to achieve his or her performance goals.
