It reminds me of some info I came across the other day that you can do to help support our troops if you're planning on going to Biketoberfest, October 16-19.

The Seminole Hard Rock Roadhouse will host the second annual Biker Fusion event to benefit Soldiers' Angels, an organization committed to increasing the morale of deployed troops, helping veterans return home healthy, and bringing comfort to wounded soldiers. This event will be held during Biketoberfest at the Main Street Doghouse Bar and Grill in Daytona on Thursday, October 16th, from 7 to 10 pm and will give us a chance to party while supporting a good cause.

This year's special guest hosts will be Billy Lane of Choppers Inc, Bruce Rossmeyer of Destination Daytona, Christian Clayton of Sucker Punch Sally's, and Paul Cox of Paul Cox Industries to name a few. The event is by invitation only, but the general public can buy entrance and mingle with the elite of the motorcycle industry for just $50. The jeans feature Kevlar lined sides, knees and butt areas, double stitched seams, as well as double flame stitched pockets. Could this be due to the gas prices or the fact that everyone wants a bike? Even scooter sales are up… small and cheap easy to get around town.

Earlier this week I got an E-mail about the number of new rides at the DMV trying to get there motorcycle license (class-1M) some were around 17,000(men and woman) this was just a ruff number given by a DMV worker. On the other hand, as of January ’08 there has been 714 reported accidents and 381 have been fatality. After talking with a CHP officer (name not given)

one thing he had noticed was that about 60% of the reported accidents were new riders less then a year of ride time. He did want to say that after the reports were given; less then 20% of the motorcycle accidents were the rider’s fault. In most cases it was the car or truck that was at fault and said “they never seen the bike”. I bring this up to ask you the readers what you think is the real reason…..? Myself being someone who rides almost everyday I have seen a more bikes going down more then ever. In the past two weeks, every morning as I get ready to head into work I have seen on the TV traffic report the words or headline start with (motorcycle accident on the 0000 freeway) so is it the riders getting the short end of the stick because it is easy to blame them for the way we ride, or is it just the cop-out we hear from drivers not looking out. Just want to know what you think and tell us what you would do different….it is safe to ride motorcycles we just need to be extra careful, most cage dwellers are to busy doing something other then driving…
Be safe and tell me what you think…

The little DOT sticker is not cutting it. Also we heard that highway patrol officers are getting trained better on how to spot DOT helmets. As of now, if you get pulled over don’t remove your helmet unless asked to. No officer can truly tell if it’s DOT as you roll down the road, not with out looking on the inside of the lid. Once you get pulled over for speeding (like myself) or any reason to get pulled over they can look inside and determine if it is legal and if not then you get the helmet ticket. Due to all the fake DOT stickers you can pick up at the swap meet more cops are asking rider to remove their helmet to look inside, then giving the ticket.
So when I seen this I had to pass it on….there is a lot of info but i want to hear about your helmet tickets how you got it and why...

U.S. TRANSPORTATION SECRETARY MARY E. PETERS PROPOSES NEW SAFETY RULES FOR MOTORCYCLE HELMETS

WASHINGTON – New rules proposed today will improve motorcycle safety by making it easier for riders to identify and use effective helmets, instead of unsafe “novelty helmets, announced U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary E. Peters. The proposal will also make it harder for riders to use novelty helmets in states that require DOT-certified helmets.

“Novelty helmets do little to protect riders during an accident,” Secretary Peters said. “This proposal will make it easier for riders to know in advance whether the helmet they buy will keep them safe.”
The proposal would amend the agency’s current motorcycle helmet safety rules to require manufacturers to place a larger, tamper-proof DOT label on the back of certified helmets. The new labels will make it harder for vendors to remove the labels on safe helmets and affix them to the unsafe novelty helmets.
The proposed rule would also strengthen the tests helmets must go through to receive DOT certification, including updated tests on how the helmets hold up during impact, whether objects can penetrate the helmet and how well the helmet stays in place during a crash. Recent tests of novelty helmets (which are not DOT certified) showed they fail to meet current DOT performance tests.
“As our testing has shown, these ‘novelty’ helmets do not have the energy absorbing capacity to protect a rider in a highway crash,” said David Kelly, Acting NHTSA Administrator. “A DOT-certified and labeled helmet, as proposed today, will help consumers make more knowledgeable decisions when purchasing a helmet.”

The proposed rule announced today will help mitigate the yearly increases in motorcycle fatalities and injuries that have plagued the nation for nearly a decade, Secretary Peters said. Fatalities have more than doubled since 1997--increasing by 144 percent. Yet new data indicate that nearly one in five motorcycle riders in states with helmet laws wear a non-compliant helmet.
In 2006, helmets saved an estimated 1,658 lives. If everyone worn a helmet, an additional 752 lives would have been saved, the Secretary said. During the same year, 4,837 motorcyclists were killed; of those, more than 40 percent weren’t wearing helmets, she said.

This affects you and I and pretty much everyone else. You know those little wheel weights that are fastened to the rims of your wheel in order to balance the tires (if you don't, now you do)? Well, a story published by the New York Times explains how the EPA plans to remove millions of pounds of lead, i.e. those small wheel weights, from the environment. The EPA launched the National Lead Free Wheel Weight Initiative (NLFWWI) targeted at reducing the use of lead wheel weights by December 2011.

And, by the way, the little wheel weights add up to a whole bunch of lead. According to the EPA, about 50 million pounds of lead are used in wheel weights each year. The EPA tells us that of that amount, about 1.6 million pounds comes flying off wheels when you hit potholes, for instance, then get ground down, with the toxin eventually finding its way into the air, in the water supply, even into farmers' fields. So what do you folks think about this? Solutions?

The bike has a flowing aerodynamic design and has the best available technology on the inside to give you that perfect Ferrari ride.
The V4 comes with a modified Ferrari Enzo engine at its heart and the hand controls of an F-16 jet and the buttons of an F1 Ferrari to control all that raw power. THe V-Twin expo is the place for manufacturers to show off their new parts and that's exactly what Derik was doing, with his newest piece the SoftDash. Currently available for FLH models, the SoftDash is a colored, coated and textured, inner fairing that replaces the stock dull, black plastic inner fairing. Similar to the dashboard on may cars, the SoftDash features a soft textured finish that gives your bike a more finished and custom look.

Sure there are other options for dressing up your inner fairing such as having it painted, but that means you'll have to wait for the painter to finish the job, which means you no ridey the bikey. And most likely if you get your inner fairing painted you'll get it color-mathced to the rest of your bike--high gloss finish and all right? Well there's a reason why the stock inner fairings come with flat black finish, to reduce glare and prevent the sun from reflecting into your eyes as you ride. The other downfall to having your inner fairing custom painted is that over time and after miles of riding you're bound to get chips, nicks and scratches.

Rather than follow the trends of what everyone else was doing with color matched, inner fairings, Derik decided to be a leader, not a follower and came up with the idea to create inner fairings in color complimenting choices that not only would make your bike look good, but is also very durable and would last a long time, the SoftDash comes with a ten year warranty. Made from a low gloss/low reflective, marine-rated, engineered leather material, Derik put his SoftDash through extensive testing in a 168 degree heat chamber for two weeks and the dash passed with no boils, bubbles, splits, or cracks.

Currently Derik has dashes available for the FLH models but he informed us that he is working on a dash for the Road Glide models as well. he also stated that while he currently offers three colors charcoal, black and tan, more colors may become available, he's going to wait and see what the market wants.

Derik recently sent us a couple dashes to install for an upcoming article so we thought we'd throw you quick bone here a let you catch a glimpse of them before the article hits the newsstands.

If this is all new to you and you're thinking to yourself "I've never heard of this YouTube before," ask your kids or any person under the age of 30 and not only will they clue you in, but you'll also get a good idea at Harley next big target demographic. I've said it before in one of my editorials and I'll say it again here, Harley's has aggressively been going after the younger riders through marketing and advertising, and now finally through their bikes with the dark custom line.

The median age of a Harley owner isn't getting any younger, in fact it's continually been getting older. And it seems Harley is finally addressing this issue, and this YouTube channel is another to tool they've added to their toolbox to help get into the hears, minds and garages of these younger generations. Now I just hope they provide video content that will appeal to the younger kids.

In Case of Emergency .......Apparently this is a standard procedure all paramedics follow at the scene of an accident when they come across your cell phone.

Over the weekend i heard of ICE from a cop friend, then when i came into work today on ABATE news letter, this is what was sent out so i felt like sharing with all of you. it is a good idea and if it can help you out, why not.....so here you go.

ICE - 'In Case of Emergency'
We all carry our mobile phones with names & numbers stored in its memory but nobody, other than ourselves, knows which of these numbers belong to our closest family or friends.

If we were to be involved in an accident or were taken ill, the people attending us would have our mobile phone but wouldn't know whom to call. Yes, there are hundreds of numbers stored but which one is the contact person in case of an emergency? Hence this 'ICE' (In Case of Emergency) Campaign.

The concept of 'ICE' is catching on quickly. It is a method of contact during emergency situations. As cell (mobile) phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted during emergency under the name 'ICE' (In Case Of Emergency). The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scenes of an accidents, there were always mobile phones with patients, but they didn't know which number to call. He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognized name for this purpose. In an emergency situation, Emergency Service personnel and hospital Staff would be able to quickly contact the right person by simply d dialing the number you have stored as 'ICE.'
For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1, ICE2 and ICE3 etc. A great idea that will make a difference! Let's spread the concept of ICE by storing an ICE number in our Mobile phones today!

ICE will speak for you when you are not able to.
hope this helps.

Here's one: Have you noticed that small bell on some people's bikes and wondered why it was there? It's more than just decoration. It has a specific function. As we all know, life has many mysteries that have no apparent solutions. One of these is Evil Road Spirits. They are the little gremlins that live on your bike. They love to ride. They're also responsible for most of your bike's problems. Sometimes your turn signal refuses to work, or the battery goes dead, the clutch needs adjustment, or any of several hundred other things go wrong. These problems are caused by Evil Road Spirits. Road Spirits can't live in the presence of a bell. They get trapped in the hollow of the bell. Among other things, their hearing is extremely sensitive. The constant ringing and confined space of the bell drives them crazy. They lose their grip and eventually fall to the roadway. (Have you ever wondered how potholes are formed?) The bell has served its purpose. If your bell was given to you, its power is greatly increased, and you know that somewhere you have a special friend helping to look after you. So, if you have a friend that doesn't have a bell, why not be the person to give them one? It's a nice feeling for the recipient to know you personally cared. The bell, plus a good preventive maintenance program by the bike's owner, will help eliminate the Evil Road Spirits.

what do you belive.......?

OK, this may be a little difficult to gauge, because after all, as the saying goes, opinions are like...well, you know. Essentially, I was looking for some rider/attendee feedback (by the way, that's where you could come in), so I visted harley-Davidson's website and found the link, Rider Rumblings.

A cool way to share your own 105th stories, photos, and videos, the Rider Rumblings are page after page of riders and motorcycle enthusiasts from all over the world commenting on the celebration. You can scroll over thousands of photos and with each image some info pops up about the shot, and then it opens to a small story. This is a great tool to find out what other riders thought and experienced at the 105th. Who knows, maybe you'll see yourself in one of the pictures. So, back to my earlier point, feel free to share your experiences. Check out some of mine and the people I met....
