Featuring Traveling Museum Creates Holiday Cheer
On the weekend of December 15, 2007, when many folks rushed to stores for holiday shopping, thousands of riders rushed to Anaheim-Fullerton Harley-Davidson to partake in the dealership's once-in-a-lifetime combo event featuring a particular legend on 18 wheels. That's right, every year the Harley-Davidson Traveling Museum rolls across the country and stops with its historic cargo at select dealerships, with one of them last year being the Fullerton, California-based dealer. As mentioned, the event offered motorcycle enthusiasts multiple attractions aside from the Traveling Museum.

What one word can sum up Sin City? Gluttony. Whether it's the craps tables, strip clubs, or massive buffets that keep the masses returning to the city that never sleeps, we at HOT BIKE like to venture to Las Vegas for another reason: Las Vegas BikeFest, which took place September 27-30, 2007. We are gluttons for bikes, babes, cool new parts, and babes! This year didn't disappoint in the least as we walked the grounds with the rest of the 34,000 attendees at the Cash man Center to check out what the 300-plus vendors have been up to. We made the rounds on Fremont Street to check out the diversity of bikes on display, partied with El Pitts and his crew from Vegas City Choppers (thanks for having us at the Voodoo Lounge party, guys!), hung out with Big Mike from BMC Choppers, and lost all of our money at the blackjack tables (actually, that part kind of sucked). This April '08 will mark the 26th Annual Laughlin River Run. April is a crazy time of year for many motorcycle enthusiasts on the West Coast. This year the event will run from April 23-27 and continues to draw the biggest vendors and crowds, not just from California's West Coast, but from all over the country. The River Run is located on the Colorado River in the rugged desert of Laughlin, Nevada, which is about 90 miles south of Las Vegas. This gambling town lights up in neon at night and has over 10 top-notch casinos for you to try your luck at while at the Laughlin Bike Rally. Every year all the big-name companies, including Harley-Davidson, Drag Specialties, JIMS, S&S, PM, Vance and Hines, Victory, Arlen Ness, Saddleman, and Big Dog set up their rigs amongst some of the biggest names in the custom motorcycle industry, such as Covingtons Custom Cycles, Matt Hotch esigns, and Central Coast Cycles.

"You going to Sturgis?"

So we just got back from being on the road for about two weeks at the Sturgis rally, and things are moving along pretty fast. From what we saw and heard from vendors and others, attendance at the rally was down, but that didn't stop us from having a blast and shooting some amazing bikes. Among them is this month's cover bike, Darin Yoerger's full-figured '99 Fat Boy. The Fat Boy's transformation started with a 240mm Metzeler that Darin got from his wife, and the bike just blew up from there.

13th Annual March of Dimes Bikers for Babies RIDE presented by Farmers InsuranceJoin thousands of motorcycle riders at Kansas Speedway to support the March of Dimes mission to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. At this AMA-sanctioned event, you will receive a commemorative pin and patch; applause from spectators along the 88-mile all-Kansas route; complimentary lunch by Hooters; admission to a Dealers' Expo and bike show; and live music. Avoid the event-day crowd and pre-register at one of seven area locations.

Last year Billy Lane introduced Sturgis to the Builder's Breakfast-a charity event raising money for Kids & Chrome. It was a huge success, raising more than $13,000 to help children in need. They were only able to accommodate 450 guests and had to turn away 500 more due to lack of space and food. That's not too shabby, considering they only planned on selling 200 tickets.

This place is a major crowd magnet-and with good reason. There's a lot happening here, and it's just far enough away from town to keep you out of all that fun Main Street traffic. As you'd expect, this year's Sturgis rally will see the Legend Top 50 Custom Bike Show, but wait-there's more: a stunt show, Dave Perewitz book signing, beautiful women with tats, and even a ride with your friendly neighborhood HOT BIKE magazine.

Located 3 miles east of Sturgis on Highway 34, Thunder Road is hard to miss. With 6 acres of paved vending space full of high-end custom aftermarket vendors and the nearly 40,000-square-foot Thunderdome, Thunder Road is one of the largest venues in the rally. For five years running, Thunder Road has made a name for itself as a great place to go for anything custom in Sturgis. This year's version is going bigger with more bike shows, more live events, and more exciting attractions than before.

Earlier this year, AMD decided to take its 4th Annual Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building "downtown" onto an all-new 4.5-acre Champions Park facility on Lazelle Street. Naturally, the Official World Championship will be the centerpiece of Champions Park, ensuring a big draw for vendors and-hopefully-vendees.

Full Throttle is one of those must-see venues for Sturgis, which is why The Black List Tour is bringing its high-octane mix of customs, art, music, and extreme sports there for the rally.

If you own a Victory, you may want to mark Wednesday, August 8, 2007, on your calendar. That's when the VRA (Victory Rider's Association) is having its party in Sturgis this year. It's set to go off at the Spearfish Canyon Lodge, same as the last two years. The VRA Party will be a late-afternoon shindig instead of a lunch. That way, Victory folks will get a chance to enjoy a day's ride and then the party before jumping into their nighttime activities. Once again the Rushmore Civic Center in Rapid City hosts Harley-Davidson during the Sturgis rally. Just hop on I-90 and make your way to Exit 57, and you'll find yourself there. It all starts Saturday, August 4, 2007, and goes until August 11.

Chaos Theory

Everybody needs a little chaos every so often. It shakes things up, leads to change, and with change comes growth. If you're reading this in the Black Hills right now, you know it doesn't get much more chaotic than Sturgis in August.

Just as you'd expect, there'll be a lot to do this year. Concerts, bike shows, races, and every type of V-Twin fun imaginable await those looking for a good time.

This past January, NorCal-more specifically, the city of San Jose, CA-was host to an inaugural show that's bound to become one of those "you've gotta go at least once" types of events. All it took were two small words to pack the McEnery Convention Center with bikes, bodies, and blue ribbbons: Arlen Ness.

Usually when people think of rivalries, the first thing that comes to mind is sports: the Giants versus the Dodgers, Cowboys versus Redskins, Ali versus Frasier. It's not too often that you hear "rivalry" and "charity" uttered in the same sentence or, in this case, printed in the same sentence. However, in the motorcycling community there's a friendly unspoken rivalry between Southern California and South Florida as to who has the largest one-day motorcycle-related charity event. On the West Coast there's the Love Ride, and on the southeast coast of Florida there's the South Florida President's Council (SFPC) Toys in the Sun Run. Both have been running for more than 18 years and have raised millions of dollars for charitable organizations.

For many, October brings a changing of the leaves and memories of another summer gone by. For others, the arrival of fall means only one thing: Biketoberfest time. Now in its 14th official year, Daytona's Biketoberfest is the last major bike rally in the country before things close down for the winter. It has everything its older sibling, Bikeweek, has to offer, except that the crowds are more manageable. This four-day event packs in so much entertainment, attractions, and variety, it's impossible to see and do everything.
