PM’s Performance Machine | 2014 Harley-Davidson Dyna Street Bob
For a bike that’s been built up, it sure looks stripped down, doesn’t it? Performance Machine chose this 2014 Harley Dyna Street Bob as its spokesmodel and catalog cover girl. One glance reveals the obvious: She’s svelte and had some work done.
Writers kick “less is more” around like a kid in glasses in a ’70s grade school whenever we talk about stripped-down, minimalist bikes. While that stereotype rings true, in this case I’d say less is more because more is more. Here’s what I mean.
Performance Machine aimed for a bare-bones bike done as completely as possible in its parts. That’s why you choose a no-frills ride like a Street Bob for a project like this. All of the parts PM used in this project align and enhance that minimalism: The chopped front fender and quarter fairing got jobs on this bike because they’re no-nonsense parts that also look good in their own right. This is the overall theme (if there is one) to this Dyna.
The motor bears this out. The crew at Performance Machine wanted their catalog pony to be a rider’s ride—the sort of hot rod you or I would build in our home garages. All the company did was bolt on a Vance & Hines 2-into-1 exhaust and one of its own JET air cleaners. It’s exactly the sort of stage one upgrade most of us do straight off of the showroom floor.
Your typical homebuilder doesn’t have a frame jig lying around, so cutting and welding the chassis wasn’t in the cards for the project. Reinventing it as a roller, however, was. PM added 13.5-inch Progressive Suspension shocks and its own front suspension and Dixon wheels to do that. Naturally, the carpet matches the drapes. PM’s Dixon pulley and rotors pull the bike’s look together in their own subtle way.
On the controls side, the changes are obvious. PM chose mini-apes for this Dyna, which works really well. The bars are a clear custom nod to chopperdom but don’t overpower the profile of the bike by reaching to the sky. There’s a time and bike for mega-apes. I just don’t think they’d look nearly as good on this Street Bob. The hand and foot controls are, of course, PM Contour pieces.
In keeping with the garage-builder vibe, Performance Machine didn’t go crazy on the bodywork. The tank and rear fender are the stock originals, though the front fender is a Roaring Toyz FL tire hugger that the company modified for use with this project.
All of these changes add up to a stripped-down rider’s bike that’s chock-full of custom. That’s what I mean by a bike that’s been built up that sure looks stripped down. Performance Machine chose this 2014 Harley Dyna Street Bob as its spokesmodel and chose very well.
